Charli Tapp is a French visual artist and composer, based in Japan, whose work stems from self-reliance, and collective capabilities.

His productions explore the extent to which technologies remain rooted in the physical realm despite the advent of dematerialization and the disconnect between Craftsmanship and Industrial Production.

Challenging the consensus on AI and Automation, Tapp’s work is often collaborative or community-based, ranging from musical scores to machine-like instruments, web-enabled artworks, and performances.

Through it, Artificial Intelligence is reframed as a human-made achievement, and industrial marvels as the stack of our species’ hands, rather than unattainable feats.

Producing weatherproof construction-site grade art pieces for a recently flooded exhibition space under renovation (2023, Utility: Signal Yellow, MONO Lisboa, PT.), transforming the basement storage area of a gallery into a soundproof survival bunker inhabited by mobile machines (2021, Anagra, Tokyo, Japan), Auto-tuning an entire lake (2018, Missing#, Luitré, France), scoring a video essay exploring the heritage of the Bauhaus into the virtual realm of Minecraft (2017, Blockchain, Vitra Museum, Weil am Rhein, GE.), Tapp’s work has been exhibited, screened or performed at the likes of the 59th Venice Art Biennale (2022, Uzbekistan National Pavilion), the DesignMuseum Denmark (2019, The Bauhaus #itsalldesign), the MET NYC (2016, In Our Time: A Year Of Architecture in a Day), and the Center of Contemporary Arts Tashkent (2021, Dixit Algorizmi), among others.
